The Diann S. Nance Memorial Golf Classic is a tournament held in the memory of Mrs. Diann S. Nance who was a devoted mother and educator in Newberry County for many years. Mrs. Nance was a tireless servant of students in her position as a teacher’s assistant. She was a firm believer in the value of a good education and personally saw to it that each child in her care received the quality education they so rightly deserved. This was especially true of her own children as well. As a single parent of two sons, Mrs. Nance sacrificed the completion of her college education to work and support her children in order to ensure they had an opportunity to further their education.
After watching her youngest son complete his studies, Mrs. Nance decided that it was time to earn a degree of her own. She enrolled in the Elementary Education Program at South Carolina State University. Mrs. Nance worked full-time and went to school part-time, driving from Newberry to Orangeburg for classes. She was only semesters away from fulfilling a life long dream when the Lord called her home.
In remembrance of the legacy of Mrs. Nance, a scholarship fund has been created to assist first year teachers in Newberry County. The major fundraiser for this fund is the annual golf tournament, which is now in its tenth year. |
